The Ackerman Cup – Race Report
When the author got down to the club there was what could only be described as a weather circle standing on the front lawn. After some discussions (lengthy) a firm decision was made to get on with it.
As the long distance was scheduled and the wind was shifty and very light- it was agreed to complete it in two short course races. Our excellent OOD set a course with guidance from Jason - that allowed plenty of flexibility. The rescue number 2 was eventually sorted and 3 rescue boat crew set forth to set the course- thank you to Steve, Ian and Sam's Mum! For the first time in memory of even some of our oldest members- it was an entirely mono hull race. Perfect for the conditions.
Race 1 started and progressed with a steep learning curve about the strength of the tide. Sam who had a perfect start and first leg (like she had a motor on her boat) hit the first buoy and then the second. Oli out for the first time on the Solo hit the second but was storming away at the front. The great fact is that there were 4 lasers out, Guy, Jo, Sam and Matty the Legend, 1 solo and 1 470 and there was fantastic match racing. It was so funny and so good. Oli had said at the start that he was worried he would not have any one to talk to. Well he never stopped chatting the whole way round. That is how close all the boats were. Guy and Jo got a cracking lift at the end of race 1 and finished over the line 1st and 2nd, followed closely by the 470.
The breeze picked up slightly in the second race and there was no stopping Jo on her new ILCA- she romped away and finished across the line first again pursued by the 470 and then Guy. Matty the Legend was having the time of his life on his new laser and Sam demonstrated excellent promise for fast laser racing on hers. It was absolutely brilliant- both races. Lots of fun, laughs and sailing banter. Well done to all who took part and to all those who facilitated. October racing at its best. A big shout out to James as well who fixed the rescue boat again!.
